This is going to sound ridiculous, but if you're going to throw the factory box/carton away, I would consider it a personal favor to me {and there a few others} if you put the original carrier back in the box, and try not to tear the opened end. I reload, and lately I have been reloading an ENORMOUS amount.  I reuse your old boxes.  I buy some spray paint for $1 at Fred's or Dollar Tree, give them a light coat and slap on my own label.  It may seem stupid to some when you see me digging in the dumpster, but I save A LOT of money and kinda enjoy what I do.  Kinda doing my part to keep it out of our landfills too {not to mention I'm too damn cheap to buy new boxes from Midway  }  Thanks and uhh, just leave that brass where if falls, I'll pick it up for you     Tongue

MW  -  What would you suggest for a reliable and cheap semi auto assault rifle, what caliber for cheap ammo, and where to buy.

I'm trying to reload a lot more now, too  -  but think it's time to buy an assault rifle.

Jeez, Ralph!  That's a tough one. It shouldn't be, it wasn't a few years ago, but now....    Nothing is really cheap to shoot anymore is it?  Okay let's see:  Starting at the bottom, an SKS is affordable, very reliable when cleaned properly, but I've had 4 or 5 of them and have never really been happy with them.

Now I have an Ak that I am very happy with.  If they are made right to begin with, I challenge ANYONE on the face of God's green earth to show me a more reliable weapon.  You cannot do it!  Mine is a parts kit build I did myself, a Yugo M70 B1.  Rock solid, and torture test proven.

My wife has an Ar-15, good rifle, VERY accurate.  I mean REALLY tight.  They are kinda labor intensive if shot alot, timely tidy cleanings are absolutely necessary.   But you said affordable, and a Good Ar isn't exactly affordable.  Atleast not to blue collars like me, so moving right along.

A CETME or a G3 clone can be bought reasonble, or could a few years ago when I bought mine.  I bought it new from Cole Dist. at Knob Creek for like $300 or so.  I'm sure they have gone up a little. .308's are pretty damn expensive though.

My personal favorite is my Galil.  It was kinda high, but what I get out of it is awesome.  If you don't know anything about them, think of all the advantages of an AK, fix the accuracy problems, give it a thumb safety, chamber it in .223, and presto!  Personally I like 7.62x39 cartridge better for it's larger slug, but the .223 is a tack driver and easier to reload.

Honestly, bottom line...Go to the guys at the Reloader's Bench, have them get you a good AK.  { they probably have a few there!}  Romanian makes are good in my experience but need a bit of cosmetic surgery.   The ones I have experience were butt ugly at the time of purchase.  Don't worry though, It's no biggie to make them look and feel alot better.  A good aftermarket stock set, and about 20 minutes.  You'll be happy with yourself later if you buy one with the scope rail already on the side.  Top cover mounts SUCK!  the side rail is best, and look at all the great side mount scopes they make!  Check out Kalinkaoptics.com

Does that help any??

MW  -  Thanks.  That helps a lot.  I've never thought about getting an assault rifle before, but am now looking for something compact, incl ammo (1000 rounds?)  that I can keep in a survival bag.  I don't care about precision accuracy, or don't think I need to.  I was thinking 223 caliber due to weight and economical (?) Mil rounds,  though I would supplement with softpoint reloads.

I've reloaded all kinds of ammo for 45 years now  -  the only ammo I buy is 22's and 45 & 9mm self defense ammo, so I can't help you with the empty boxes.

Check out Kel-Tec Carbines.  The Sub 2000 can be bought in both 9mm and .40 calibers and use popular pistol magazines.  They also have .223 rifles.  The reason I suggest you take a look is they fold up and are hard to beat for stowing.  I don't own one, yet.  Thinking about getting a Sub 2000 in .40 (Glock 22 Mag).

Dang! KelTech sure are proud of the .223 rifle!  Over $650...You can get a Star AR-15 from Centerfire Systems for that.  The little carbines sure handy though.  If they ever make a .45acp that uses Springfield Armory XD mags, I'll buy one.

Ralph

Go with the AK47. Upside is cheap ammo, lots of cool add-0ns can be had.
Downside is: well there is not one. Go with an AK
Have had mine for years never had a problem, and it's a cheap Norinco

Thanks for suggestions.  I'm leaning toward an AK design (reliable and inexpensive?)  and 7.62X39 (Inexpensive).  Re: the 7.62X39  -  any comments about 123Gr  vs  154gr?

I'm going to Reloaders Bench next week to check some rifles out.  I'm sure I'll have more questions.  And, I've gotten off MW's Ammo Box topic.  So, I'll open up a new topic when I have some Rifle Questions.  Thanks, Ralph

I'll give you some boxes if you teach me how to reload

I'm at the range about once a week and I usually see boxes around.  I'll try to save them if I remember.

Actually I hit the jackpot a while back, it will take me quite some time to fill them all.  I'm so sick of casting at the moment Grin but I continue.  With the changes coming on the horizon, and the possibility of banning lead wheel weights in the near future, I have tripled my efforts at putting away a "lifetime supply" of cast and sized boolits.  I implore all reloaders to stock up on EVERYTHING.  It's only a matter of time.
